About "Character Assessment Game"
About This Download
The beginning of the speech and debate season calls for an activity that gets your students excited and involved. The purpose of this activity is to develop group dynamics, break through some ice, as well as give you, the coach, the ability to assess individual student skills.
Students are divided into small groups where each group prepares a short commercial using an object or a concept that has been provided by the instructor. After the prep time, each group performs the commercial for the rest of the class. Every student must speak at least one line that is not a sound effect.
I like to do this at the first club meeting, and then later in the year to see the progression. This simple exercise can give you so much information to help you direct the students for the rest of the year. Who are your natural leaders and followers? Who just wants to have fun? Who wants to get down to business and get this organized?
This is an activity that is akin to many personality type models, a way to see how each student acts and reacts in a group scenario. Think Gary Smalley and John Trent (the Lion, Otter, Beaver, Golden Retriever personality types), as well as DISC or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
