About "Following Current Events"
About This Download
I believe every club session should start by discussing current events. Students who are involved in limited-prep should always be aware of what is going on in the world. Their speeches (extemp, apologetics and parli debate) should weave in that which is on the minds of their judges. By referencing current events, speakers will show the are the smart ones in the room.
This goes for debaters, too. Policy, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum debaters will have their specific topics to debate, but referencing something that happened the week before will greatly enhance their persuasive opportunities in the debate round.
Take, for example, the Las Vegas shooting on October 1. It just so happened that the NSDA released its Public Forum resolution on that very same day: “Resolved: The United States should require universal background checks for all gun sales and transfers of ownership.” The political Left wasted no time in condemning current gun laws and, essentially, affirming the resolution. Likewise, the political Right was essentially negating the resolution from the start.
Failing to make the connection between the current event and the PF resolution would be a huge oversight on a coach’s part. You should take the time before you assemble your students to prepare a “Current Events Lesson,” especially when your debate topic is hot in the news.
Monument Memberships make this easy by providing three releases every week that can, with a little bit of effort, help you connect current events with the research your students need to do for their debate events.
