The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is a law passed in 2010 which purported to lower health insurance costs. Since then, premiums have risen and the Republicans have listed repealing the law as a priority.
This past week, a bill to repeal parts of the law, known as the “skinny repeal” bill, would have removed the individual mandate, which penalizes nonexempt people who don’t have health insurance. Additionally, it would have postponed the employer mandate, which would have required employers to provide healthcare services for their employees.
The bill was narrowly defeated with a Senate vote of 51-49. No Democrat voted for the bill, and John McCain, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski were the only Republicans to vote against it.
Other question topics this week include Trump’s transgender ban, new US sanctions on Russia, Priebius’ replacement, cyber warfare in Ukraine, and more.
