About This Download
Venezuela is a bit of a mess. After last week’s questionably “democratic” elections, Nicolas Maduro was re-elected president, promising to rewrite the country’s constitution and firm up power, the kind many are labeling “dictator.” Maduro’s opponents were already under house arrest, but after the election, two of the most vocal opponents were officially hauled off to prison. Overall, Maduro has done a depressingly effective job consolidating power.
How should the international community respond? To start, the Trump administration has placed sanctions on Maduro, freezing his assets and denying him business privileges with US companies.
Extempers also get to delve into questions about Anthony Scaramucci, John Kelly, Russia (of course), the opioid and marijuana problems, ISIS, China, and Elon Musk’s “pipe dream.”
