About "Net Neutrality"
In 2015, the Obama Administration added “net neutrality” rules for the Internet. These rules are enforced by the Federal Communications Commission to regulate internet service providers (AT&T, Comcast and Verizon) to make sure they don’t manipulate the information that is broadcast to the world wide web. According to advocates for Net Neutrality, the future of the internet is at stake if Net Neutrality was ever removed.
But the title is somewhat deceiving. “Net neutrality” suggests fairness and “neutrality,” but who is the referee? The government. No, worse: a government agency of unelected bureaucrats who can change the rules of the internet as it sees fit. Arguably, the free market would do a better job at ensuring freedom of information than the government.
The Trump administration wants to dismantle net neutrality. Let the markets control the internet. Of course, he is being faced with opposition from those who believe government can do a better job of making things fair and “neutral.”
