About "Battle for Damascus"
The Syrian conflict is raging full force as President al-Assad seeks to regain and consolidate control of Damascus. Fighting has intensified as Assad’s armies move to destroy the rebel forces based in Ghouta, an enclave north of Damascus. Turkish forces have begun shelling to counter balance, which has put the US and Allies at odds with the Turkish forces.
Thousands of Syrian civilians have been forced to flee Ghouta due to the conflict, increasing the magnitude of the refugee crisis. More than 10,000 civilians were displaced due to the shelling in Ghouta, the largest displacement since conflict near Ghouta began in 2013.
The ongoing conflict is prompting discussions of whether the US and allies should maintain support of the Turkish forces. While strengthening the opposition against Assad, the shelling is causing widespread human rights violations. If the US pulls support from the Turkish forces, the future of the conflict will only become more uncertain.
