Journalists help keep us accountable. They provide the people in any society with the information hey need to make the most informed decisions possible. More than that, they do the investigating that exposes injustice in the world around us.
Confidentiality allows them to continue to do so.
Justice is a buffer value that’s very hard to defeat. Your opponent is likely to run a narrower moral value like accountability, media trust, or something of the like. Show how justice is more comprehensive and takes foremost priority when compared to any moral issue.
The contention is where you win. Subpoint A shows the judge how your side of the debate round allows witnesses to live. Subpoint B shows them how that makes journalists do their job better. Subpoint C shows how that makes our lives better.
Paint a world without confidentiality as a world without justice.
