About "Difference Principle"
This case purports to resolve the inherent specificity concerns in the resolution by deploying resolutional analysis that appeals to debate’s conciliatory spirit, proposing that definitional and analytic concerns be subordinated to a higher goal: deriving broad principles governing the relationships among nations.
This analysis enables the case’s strategic power: establishing a comprehensive, coherent value framework that’s robust enough to fully justify the resolution in principle and allow an affirmative who’s studied the ideas behind the case and is well-versed in Rawlsian theory to provide specific answers to any negative hypotheticals or applications.
Moreover, this value makes it easy to reject an opposing value for the simple reason that it’s a less robust measure. Most standard weighing mechanisms aren’t philosophically rigorous enough to create universally-applicable moral obligations – or deny those obligations’ existence. When running this case, remove opposing values on those grounds.
Finally, this is a framework-centric case. Given a Rawlsian approach to distributive justice (which the framework in this case establishes) it’s easy to project the framework to an international scale. The international community is a community of nations which are, in a plethora of ways, unequal. As a community, it is incumbent upon us to arrange those inequalities in the most just way possible. Unless an opponent can offer a superior explanatory narrative that suggests a substantive path to attaining distributive justice, the affirmative wins.
