About "Public Shaming"
Public shaming has made a comeback. What we had thought such tactic was reserved to history — Salam witch trials and pre-colonial canings — has made its mark in modern politics. Brett Kavanaugh isn’t the first to be shamed by a public mob.
I’ve felt the fury of the self-proscribed justice warriors. It prompted me to read a most prolific book by Jon Ronson called So, You’ve Been Publicly Smeared. He interviews victims of social media mobs. Most of them are ordinary people who (perhaps) make foolish comments on Twitter or Facebook, and then get mauled by a rabid and judgmental online community. Ronson says, “We know that people are complicated and have a mixture of flaws and talents and sins. So why do we pretend that we don’t?”
It’s a good read. I recommend the book, and — more so — I recommend you take this rising issue seriously. Especially if you are a parli debater.
This week’s topics of debate include social smearing, economic disparities, Trudeau’s recent showdown with Donald Trump, foreign dependency in our military, and more!
