About "October Surprise"
Anything can happen in two weeks. November 6 will host the most dramatic midterm election in our lifetime. Arguably, not since Abraham Lincoln has emotions run so high. It seems as if both sides of the aisle are looking out for an “October Surprise.”
An October surprise is an election-year headline that takes the electorate by “surprise” and influences the final vote. Sometimes they are intentionally planted or revealed by one of the political parties. In 2016, Wikileaks released incriminating emails against Hillary Clinton that helped the Trump campaign; likewise, Access Hollywood released embarrassing audio of Donald Trump boasting of sexual harassment. Both stories hurt the other side.
Parli debaters, have fun with the next couple weeks with scenario resolutions. We start one off this week that should make for a dicey debate round.
This week’s topics of debate include the midterm elections, a scenario where war breaks out between Turkey and Saudi Arabia (and what the US should do about it), resolutions about Rosenstein and Comey, a call for more local support for education, and more!
